Kevin reported that he sold his retail Travel Agency National Network Travel in Exhibition Street, Melbourne. He is still an active Director in two other travel business’s and is looking forward to semi-retirement. Brian Hopkins spoke about his recent trip to Antarctica, which was quite a contrast to his regular visits to a Safari Park in South Africa. Richard Habgood related his experiences in his early days of moving to Warragul as a young man. He was in the Department of Agriculture, some of his colleagues encouraged him to join Jaycees and from there enjoyed the fellowship and benefitted from the personal development opportunities. His wife Mary was somewhat cautious at the start but subsequently embraced the Jaycettes and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Richard has just completed his term as President of the Warragul Rotary Club.Wild Dog winery was the venue for the 5th Past Jaycees and Jaycettes biannual reunion. It was the first function in the renamed Hoggets Restaurant. So same venue as previous functions but different name and new management. It was a delightful setting on a nice day and great to see 50 people in attendance. MC was Kevin Dale who conducted proceedings which included a 3 course meal. 30 people sent in apologies so it is good to see that this event is quite popular.
Peter Dutneal gave an enlightening account of his travels as a Hot Air Balloonist Pilot in several countries around the world. It has been a lifetime hobby and a passion of his and has made several international friends. Bernie and Margret Blackshaw left Warragul quite a few years ago and moved up North. They have always had a strong interest in harness racing and breeding. The most notable success was a horse they bred called Smoulder. It was sold to interests in New Zealand and has now won 2 Million in prize money, which is the 8th highest of all time. They now look forward to the future with another foal with the same breeding.
John Boomsma is enjoying retirement from the Department of Agriculture, he and his wife Helen are keen walkers. They have completed several treks in New Zealand and have walked across the UK. Most impressively they also walked the 800 kilometres “Camino de Santiago” pilgrimage route in Spain. Kevin and Alison Thomson are now living back in Melbourne after several up in Noosaville. Kevin gave us and entertaining rendition of a Bush Ballard about Ned Kelly. Bill Pyle advised that he has now sold his House and the remaining piece of his farm to his neighbour. He is moving into Fairview Homes.
Mavis Gallienne related the heartfelt news that her youngest daughter, in her 40’s has developed dementia. The family live in Shepparton and have three teenage daughters. Her husband is a Dentist and is now working part time to help with family duties. Mavis and John have been assisting and have now bought a unit nearby. Mavis has been a full-time carer for the past two years. We give them our best wishes.
Graeme Hollingsworth operated the original KFC outlet in Warragul he then moved away and came back to Warragul in recent years. His hobby is car racing and is now strongly involved in the Gippsland Classic Car and Sports Club which was started by fellow Jaycee Doug Armour. Kevin Dale gave a rendition of the lengthy Cricket Ballard “When McDougall topped the score”.
